“whatdowedo” mobile apps - either it’s going to get really good or really nasty

12.15.2006 | Toothless Tiger, tendencies

“whatdowedo” is my name for the mobile apps where you tell people what you are thinking etc - what I predict will be the step further for the blogosphere. I think it’s brilliant…
but Twitter is starting to give me a bit of problems - or the “twitter’ers” - because everytime one of my “friends” on Twitter is “twittering” - I have an sms send.

So far I only have 8 people on my friend list, but ! - it results in 40 extra sms’s a day. it’s grand ! but I can’t turn some of the friends of the mobile ( only all friends or direct messages seems to be the option now)…

and this is not to bitch about my friends but… the mentality of the messages has to be something good - otherwise I am not interested… I mean, I would claim that my friends are wasting my time if they write stuff like ” in the bathroom”, “podcasting”, “reading a book” on twitter…
I want their thoughts - not stuff where I generally think ” so what?” -

so watch out for the twittering people… and I think for this to be truely exceptional, we need to watch our words as well =)

Actually, you can turn people on and off the phone on a per-person basis, as well. From their profile (e.g., http://twitter.com/ev), if they’re your Twitter friend, select “leave” and you’ll still see them on the web, but not on your phone. You can also just send “leave [username]” from the phone.

You can also use Twitter with your instant messenger (GTalk, AIM, Jabber) which is a bit “lighter” on the interruptions than SMS; when you go offline from your IM, your messages will go to your phone, instead.

Hi Blaine -

Yep I know about the IM thing - but thanks for the information anyways… how long have you been using twitter?

Hi Henriette,
The SMS-ing by Twitter really got on my nerves. My main issue with it is that it gives me the items one by one in an SMS. I am way more interested in the pattern that builds when you someones activities in a glance. As a peripheral awareness of what people are up to, and if there is something in there worth a second look and some interaction. I do not need the seperate messages for that, just the general chatter. So I switched the SMS updates for Twitter of again.

best,
Ton

Hi Ton -

I am thinking the same - it all depends how people are using the twittering… I mean with “leaving” ( I think it’s a strange term for unsubscribing from SMS services from your friends..) you friends you might miss out on cool and fun information =)

but I don’t need to hear somebody say ” blogging”, “blogged again” , “commenting”, “eating” etc..

I think an important way to approach the “whatdowedo” applications are with asking the question ” would I like to know this ?” before sending it out. at least, that is what need to be done to have the SMS service working properly…

I also see the “whatdowedo” as extremely personal, so it’s going to be limited who I would want to have sms’es of what I do - I also think that most people don’t really give a damn…

I think instead of writing what you’re actually doing - I would rather have some deep thoughts, or some funny ones… so more “wondering”, “thinking” , and “twisting my brain” - in stead of ” going to sleep” - or ” have to go to the loo” …

I could write about this subject forever *s*
