finding the digital divide – if there is any ?

(picture: guess from where and who’s on it)..

So – Last week I came home from Lift07 where there was a lot of substainability issues within technology that was adressed.

The biggest questions where raised doing the digital divide panel – moderated by David Galipeau. Now the Digital Divide is the gap between those who has access to technology and those who hasn’t.

I am a firm believer that people will always benefit for technology – and I think that it is a good idea to try and minimize the divide by putting more technology in the less technologically advanced places.

The most interesting question about adressing the digital divide question came from Sugata Mitra who is the initiator of the infamous hole in the wall project . He wanted people who are keen on reducing the digital divide to find out if the less technological places would become better places if they where suddently exposed to more technology ?

I think this is a very key point to the question of the digital divide. Of course there will always be some places having more technology then others, but still, are we really sure that the people in the less technological places would be HAPPIER with more technology ? how do you make technology for illiterates ?

How could the less technological societies learn how to use this large package of technology without having the society collapsing to some extend ? would it fit with their current norms and ways of living ?
